Heads poking through walls, dead soldiers appearing in photographs, men wandering the chapel; these are just a few of the ghostly tales that could be told to you on a Tower of London ‘Twilight Tour’.
Although not strictly a ghost tour, some Yeomen love a good scare and don’t need much encouragement to share their personal spooky stories with you.
Our Yeoman Warder, Kev, was a delightful fellow. He led us around the Tower; from Traitors gate to the Scaffold Site (the site of Anne Boleyn execution), then onto the Bloody Tower, with its tales of terror and torture.
We were loving it.
If you have visited the tower before then it is more than likely you have already been on a Yeoman Tour. If so, I bet you are wondering what exactly makes this tour worth the 25 smackeroos?
Well, here’s why.
Firstly, you walk around the Tower ALONE (well…excluding your tour group). This usually only happens in dreams.
Without the tourist hustle and bustle, the Yeoman are on their game and you have the opportunity to ask them ANYTHING. We obviously couldn’t help ourselves and steered right off topic to find out how the Yeoman and their families celebrate Christmas at the Tower. And, of course, other important questions like how exactly Kev’s (handsome) teenage son sneaks back in after a night out at the pub (apparently there is a SECRET passage!)?
The only downside was that the gift shop wasn’t open, but I can’t criticise HRP for that – I really don’t need ANOTHER Anne Boleyn Christmas tree decoration.
All in all, it’s definitely worth the visit. Take a loved one, your best friends or as we did, Sandra of medievalists.net fame! I promise you…it will not disappoint!
A big thank you to all the Press Team at Historic Royal Palaces for making our dreams come true.
